Area Snoops 13
Boundaries:  East 12th to East 15th, French to Wayne

Our group originated in the early 90”s.  Most of our Board of Directors
has remained the same throughout the years mainly because of the
trust that our membership has in our leadership.  This being said,
however, we do have a bi-yearly election which is what our bi-laws
governs and thus far have come back with the same officers.  –WHY?
BECAUSE WE CARE AND WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR
NEIGHBORHOOD BOTH WITH SAFETY AND RECOGNIZIBILITY AND
BY SECURING THE GRANTS AND HELP WITH OUR PARTNERSHIPS
WITH SUCH ORGANIZATIONS AS THE CITY, UNITED WAY,
BUSINESS OWNERS, AND CONTRACTORS, WE HAVE FOUND THAT
WE DID/HAVE MADE THAT DIFFERENCE! WE DO NOT COLLECT A
PAYCHECK, BUT WE GET BACK THAT “GOOD FEELING” OF
HELPING A NEIGHBOR IN NEED!

Our membership meetings are scheduled every 3rd Monday of the
month at 7 pm sharp!  We meet at the neighborhood Community
Center at 1401 Wallace Street.

I think there “absolutely” has been a difference in our neighborhood
because of the Watch Group.  We have seen the prostitutes pretty
much eradicated from our area.   We have closed down a speak easy
(which was a breeding ground for drugs.)  We have discovered a
Meth house and working with the drug task force it was turned over to
the proper authorities to disassemble.  We partnered with Weed and
Seed and do work with the saturation patrol within our neighborhood.
Our neighbors “see” and report, which gives us the statistics to back
up our examples.  We also discovered the need for a Food Bank in
our neighborhood.  These bags of food are handed out to 31 families
monthly (usually the last Saturday of the month.)  Our families are in
need and they fully appreciate this function of our group.

We have purchased 2 parks and maintain them.  By this we mean:
mowing lawn, having a garden (we were the very first watch group that
started this.)  We also hold the National Night out which was found in
a magazine by our Sergeant of arms who was the very first group to
start this which is now also partnered by the United Way.  We have
kept ours very simple; hot dogs and other condiments, including pop
and frozen ices.  We mingle among the neighbors that come and get
to know not only the homeowner, but also the renters that consume
most of the housing in our area.  Our National Night out has brought
dignitaries such as the late Brad Foulk, Mayor Sinnott, members of
City Council, Fire trucks which are manned by workers who give the
children something to look at and know how things work when going to
a fire; and also talk about fire and police safety.  We have also had
fingerprinting which the children enjoyed.  This is all brought about by
our Board of Directors and a few volunteers from the neighborhood.
Most of our neighborhood homeowners are elderly, but they come to
help no matter what…we also participate with the National Day of
Caring each year, and have a successful clean-up within the
neighborhood.

We were just awarded a $250,000 grant from the State to do work
within our neighborhood.  Again, we are the ‘ONLY’ group to have this
award. Homeowners in our neighborhood will be offered the chance to
buy a home alarm system. The purchase price and installation is
funded by us and the homeowners will be responsible for the $20
monthly fee, ONLY…Our next GOAL  is to re-do sidewalks – hoping to
partnership with the City (as they are doing the corners to be
handicapped accessible.) After this the manager that we hire will be
doing neighborhood visits to explain our goal to help those that may
need help with the façade of their property and etc. We will also have
a separate fund for any other emergency work such as a new hot
water heater or furnace or anything else that also might put it into an
emergency category which we will also have grant money available.
We use the estimate system, and the BOD approves the choice; some
of our estimates are greatly reduced because our contractors want to
help us and be a partner in our neighborhood.    Our choices for work
to be done in the neighborhood is all categorized and an amount is
placed in that fund so that at the time it is needed by the homeowner,
they can come to us for approval and help.  SO THE  BOTTOM
LINE…OUR GOALS REACH OUT TO HELP OUR NEIGHBORHOOD
TO BECOME: MORE SAFETY DRIVEN, BETTER TO LOOK AT,
PROTECTED BY INTRUDERS, CONTINUED WORK ON GREENN
SPACE WITH TREE PARKS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD,  AND WORK
TOGETHER WITH OUR NEIGHBORS TO MAKE CHANGES THAT
WOULD NOT NORMALLY BE DONE BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF
FUNDS ON THEIR PART.
