Hammermill Hounds Neighborhood Watch
Boundaries: East Lake Rd to 12th St – S. East 9th, N to E 12th- W. of East Avenue,
to Bayfront Connector
The Hammermill Hounds are in their 4th year of serving the neighborhood. We
organized because there was no one to ‘watchdog’ the area and try to bring
neighbors together to have more pride in their homes and surrounding area. We
have been met with a lot of hard work and negativity which can be hard to deal with,
but we want to continue to fight the good fight and make a difference. We can
always use more help and more ideas to help with our huge endeavor.
We will be meeting at the Huzars Club, 1100 block of East 10th Street this year every
other month on the second Tuesday at 7 P.M. Our first meeting this year (2010) will
be on April 12th.
We have seen positive change in our neighborhood. We feel there has been an
awareness made of what goes on more now that the neighbors know that we are
here and that there is someone to go to for answers and help them find solutions
with problems they are having.
Our Watch has participated in neighborhood projects over the years. We have
revitalized Wayne Park and continue to try to keep it clean and free of dangerous
debris. We have also done some work on the park attached to the Hess Avenue ball
field. We are going to be painting the park benches and trimming trees again this
year as we have done in the past. We also received a grant from the Erie
Community Foundation to supply the Tri-Parish Food Pantry with food they would
not normally be able to give to families. We also, with the help of the Neighborhood
Action Team, rid the neighborhood of a nuisance barber shop on East Avenue. We
have been very fortunate to have been included in the Weed & Seed area. This has
helped a lot and makes us feel we are truly part of the solution. So, I would say our
biggest goal would be to recruit more neighbors and funds for more projects.
